Hard not to think of all the people who are being uprooted by Trump’s nefarious policies right now, across the United States. When I lived in France, I went to the movies every weekend with my husband. On Cape Cod, we had less access to new films, but whenever we visited Boston, we saw a movie at the Kendall Square Cinema. Since the pandemic, my movie-going has diminished, so it was with pleasure that I accompanied a friend to see The Brutalist at the Kendall in Cambridge. Yesterday the movie was nominated for ten Oscars after winning three big Golden Globes: Best Director, Best Male Actor, Best Movie. Adrien Brody put in an exceptional performance, and I hope he wins the Oscar too. If you plan to see the movie, know that the three and a half hours are not a film length that we are accustomed to anymore. I really enjoyed the first half, which made me think about what my father must have experienced when he arrived in New York City with $300 in his pocket.
